Frequently asked questions

How do sessions work?

Sessions are done on Tuesdays, both during 9-5 hours and in the evening. The most frequently you'll need to see me is every four weeks, hopefully keeping any disruption to your work or other Tuesday plans to a minimum. On the morning of your appointment, I will send you a teams link, which also acts as an appointment reminder. After we finish that day's content, we'll get our next appointment pencilled in.

What does voice training involve?

Voice training is altering specific aspects of your voice (ie pitch, resonance, onset, intonation) to achieve a desired vocal gender presentation. It’s achieved through the exercises you and your vocal coach choose, and can all be mixed and matched to suit you! For your best results, you'll need to practice these excercises daily, so while the appointments are infrequent, the process can be a little intense. It's important to talk to whoever you're working with about how best to fit this into your daily life, if it feels unmanageable then it's worth exploring a new approach.

Why change anything other than pitch?

Pitch is not the only cue for gender in speech, and recent research points to it being much less important than we had previously thought! While there are typical ranges cis people fall into for pitch, gender is never a one size fits all experience based on a single factor. All genders have a huge scope of range within single factors, and there is often more variation within genders than between them on any given gendered cue. Changing pitch alone may not create the results some people hope for, but as with everything- what you want out of voice coaching is up to you. What sounds affirming is your call completely, and not a decision to be made out of the precedent set by cis practitioners or listeners.

I don't want to sound like a cis person, is it worth me accessing voice coaching?

I'm big on gender joy, not cis approval. A playful and relaxed approach means we can find your voice, be it masculine, feminine or adrogynous. All genders and all presentations are welcome to this service, without judgement, confusion (I was on the internet as a non-binary thirteen year old I have met people with genders your nan couldn't concieve of existing) or any need to shrink yourself.

Is voice coaching worth it if I’m on T?

Short answer is yes! People on T are at risk of vocal strain because of improper voice use which can be identified by someone with appropriate training, we can also prevent it happening. Lots of people on T also report disappointment with their voice changes, ranging from it didn’t drop as much as they’d hoped- to finding themselves with ‘t-boy voice’ (caused by a drop in pitch but no changes in resonance), which not everyone wants to have. T only impacts your pitch, not your resonance, intonation, or other skills involved with moving to a traditionally masculine voice, some of which you may want to learn to achieve the right sound for you.
